When you are traveling to a new country, one of the most common questions is how to move among the main tourist attractions of each city. If you are one of those people who like to discover every corner by yourself, without hiring a tourist guide to take you from one place to another, this article will interest you.

Here, we are going to tell you all the options of transport to mobilize in the two most visited cities of Peru: Lima and Cusco.

LIMA

With more than 2,600 km², the capital of Peru is the largest city in our country. The main tourist attractions are concentrated in the southern zone (in the districts of Barranco and Miraflores) and in the city center. There are different means of transport between these points:

Metropolitano

The Metropolitano is one of the means of transport most used by the people from Lima everyday. This bus, which travels mainly through the Vía Expresa, crosses the entire city from south to north. So, if you are staying in the districts of Barranco or Miraflores, you can get to the city center in this means of transport.

To use it, you will have to buy a card that costs S/ 4.50 (US$ 1.5) and recharge it for each trip you are going to make. The price of the trip is S/ 2.5 (less than US$ 1).

Corredor Azul

Another way to get from the districts of Miraflores and Barranco to the center of Lima is by using the Corredor Azul. These buses cross the Arequipa Avenue completely, so you can arrive to many tourist attraction located in this area.

The price of the tickets is between S/ 1.50 and S/ 1.70 (around US$ 0.50) and you can only pay in cash.

Buses

The buses, also known as combis or micros is something that always catches the attention of tourists who come to Peru. From them, the so-called “collectors” shout the name of the places they are going to. The routes of these buses are very diverse, so the best thing yo can do is to ask the collector if he goes to your destination.

Taxi

The taxis in Lima are very cheap for foreigners. A trip from Miraflores or Barranco to the city center costs around S/ 15 (US$ 4.5), so if you are traveling with more people you can share a taxi and move in a more comfortable way at a good price.

Although in Lima you will find many taxis on the street, we recommend you to download an application (Uber, Cabify, TaxiBeat …), the price is similar and the service is safer.

CUSCO

The city of Cusco (385 km²) is much smaller than Lima, so traveling it is easier. To the tourist places within the city you will be able to arrive by walking, leaving the differents means of transport for farer places like the Sacred Valley or Machu Picchu.

Buses

As occurs in Lima, in Cusco there are several bus companies that carry out the routes through the city. These buses do not have a number, so you’ll have to look at the windshield or the sides, where it says the names of the destinations the bus going to.

The price of these buses is around S/ 1 (US$ 0,30) within the city.

Collectives taxis

Another of the curiosities of our country are the collectives taxis shared by people who do not know each other but who have the same destination. If, for example, you want to go to a place in the Sacred Valley on your own, you can use these means of transport that leave from some central areas such as Avenida Grau.

The price varies depending on the destination and the number of passengers that go in the collective taxi.

Taxi

In Cusco you will also find taxis on practically all the streets of the city, but as we recommend you in Lima, it is best to use taxis from authorized companies or Uber, as they are safer.

The taxis in Cusco are cheaper than in the capital, so if you want to travel long distances, this means of transport is a good option.

Tourist tram

Although the tram is an unusual means of transport in our country, in Cusco you will find it a tourist one and you can take a tour around the city on it.

For around S/ 30 (US$ 9), the tourist tram of Cusco takes you from the Plaza de Armas through the most emblematic places of the city, in a journey of approximately 90 minutes.

Train

But if there is a famous means of transportation in Cusco, that is the train, since it is the one that will take you to the exciting citadel of Machu Picchu.

The trains to Machu Picchu depart from two stations: Poroy, half an hour away from Cusco, and Ollantaytambo, two hours away from the city, and they have different departures schedules throughout the day. The price of a ticket with Inca Rail to Machu Picchu Pueblo goes from 59 dollars.

Everyday, hundreds of people travel to these stations to take the train to one of the 7 Wonders of the World. Do you want to be one of them?
