This picturesque town, located 2,040 meters/6,692 feet above sea level, is surrounded by a beautiful river and inmense mountains that seem to speak.
In this town, you will find the Putucusi mountain, one of the favorite activities of the adventurers, which is 2,560 meters/8,399 feet high. Even though it crosses a poorly marked road and the route takes approximately two hours, you will enjoy the view of the Ciudad Inca of Machu Picchu from an obscure angle. Don’t forget to wear trekking shoes and bring drinking water for the way.
If you wish to continue acclimating to your arrival at Machu Picchu, you can visit the craft market of Aguas Calientes. It is one of the favorite places of many tourists because here, you can find a great variety of crafts and gadgets. Remember that because of the proximity to the Ciudadela of Machu Picchu you will find a variety of prices!
If you wish to relax before going to Machu Picchu, we recommend visiting the hot springs. Small pools of warm natural water where the temperature varies between 38°C/100°F to 46°C/114°F. These waters are attributed curating properties in the treatment of all kinds if illnesses. To get to the hot springs, you will need to go the highest part of the town and continue down the Avenue Hermanos Ayar of Aguas Calientes.
If you are looking to acclimate, but also get to know a little about history, we invite you to make a stop at the Museo de Sitio Manuel Chavez Ballon that exhibits tools, ceramics, textiles, and stone gadgets that were exhumed from the Ciudad Inca. It is located in the Hiram Bingham highway that leads to Machu Picchu at the kilometer 112.
At night time, you will have the chance to enjoy restaurants, bars, clubs, and hotels. You will find different options in pricing and quality, like at the stock of provisions market of Aguas Calientes or at the Tinkuy Buffet. Bars like Inkaterra or hotels like Casa del Sol or Sumaq Hotel are also located in this town.
